Road weather information system (RWIS) is an automated system conveying weather and road condition information as well as forecasts to the road operators and personnel responsible for the maintenance of roads. A RWIS back-end application collects and refines information and stores it into a database. Weather and traffic information are monitored through applications using map interfaces.
The road weather information system increases the efficiency of road maintenance in varying weather and road conditions:
- Weather and road condition information management
- Proactive measures
- Timely skid prevention
- Fast mobilization
- Optimized road salt usage
- Systematic operations
Intrinsic has many years of experience in the field of modern road weather information management and helps state organizations, cities and communities to optimize the efficiency of road maintenance in varying weather and road conditions.
Contact us and we will help you to build the best possible solution to make our roads safe in the most cost-effective way. We can offer consulting services about road weather information systems and also a complete tailored system from back-end applications to monitoring and decision support tools.
Our Road Weather Information System for Professionals
Intrinsic offers Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) for road weather professionals. Our products range covers RWIS solutions from back-end applications to monitoring and decision support tools.
Our RWIS back-end application collects and refines information from road weather stations, traffic stations and cameras and stores it into a database. IntrinWay is a road weather visualization and decision support application for road maintenance professionals. IntrinWay provides excellent tools to monitor road weather and road condition in order to make right decisions for road maintenance. The objective is to improve the safety and smooth flow of the traffic. IntrinWay is currently used by road maintenance professionals at Fintraffic Ltd.
We also offer customized auxiliary Road Weather Information System solutions, such as interfaces for traffic control systems and ERP solutions for road maintenance.
We offer full support for the systems we deliver throughout their lifecycle.
IntrinWay – Application for road weather monitoring and decision support
IntrinWay is a road weather monitoring and decision support application for road maintenance professionals as well as for traffic centers and research units. The main features of IntrinWay include:
- Weather, traffic and road surface condition monitoring based on intuitive visualization of observations and forecasts
- Radar and satellite pictures are available in a single application
- Visualization provides decision support for proactive measures, timely skid prevention, fast fleet mobilization and optimized road salt usage
- All necessary information is available at a single glance. Multiple windows with different information can be displayed on the same screen at the same time
- Predefined, named schemas for each window-type. Users can predefine various schemas with different data to be displayed according to the window type. Accessible by just clicking the name of the schema from a list
- Requires no box-ticking to select the displayed information
- Seamless integration with station hardware maintenance applications
- Safe and smooth traffic through road maintenance with the operation costs under control
Map window
- Vector graphics and map server technology; excellent zooming capabilities
- Access to all station and camera observations with a single click
- Color-coded station symbols provide an overview of current road weather conditions
- Weather station symbols represent the direction and speed of wind
- Users can freely change the order and opacity of the map layers in a map window
- Radar animations run on the map along with the sensor values of different stations
- The operational status of a station/camera is displayed in the event of a malfunction
- Access to the hardware maintenance application by clicking the station/camera status message
Weather radar window
- Radar pictures can be animated in the map window or in a separate window
Weather camera window
- You can display an animation of the pictures from one camera or those from several cameras in a series
- Opens by clicking the camera symbol in the map window
Road weather graph window
- Illustrates measurements and forecasts of the most essential road weather sensor values in a single view as a time series
- Overall weather and surface conditions are displayed using easily readable color-coded status bars
- Can be opened simply by clicking the station symbol in the map window
Traffic graph window
- Illustrates the present traffic flow and statistics, such as the average speed and the traffic density
Table window
- All station measurements are displayed in configurable tables
- Table windows can be used to display both road weather and traffic data measurements at different stations
Weather satellite window
- Can be used to animate weather satellite pictures
- Different satellite picture types (e.g. Meteosat ir, NOAA ir) can be animated simultaneously in separate windows
Gradient window
- Displays animated gradient maps of defined sensor values (air temperature, RST, dew-point, etc.)
- Animations continue seamlessly from observations to forecasts when available
RWIS back-end application
- The back-end system is the heart of a RWIS, in charge of collecting, refining and storing road weather, camera and traffic information
- Scalable, open and modular. Grows with your installation from tens to thousands of stations and cameras. Communicates with various station and camera hardware. Open interfaces allow easy addition of new application modules
- Provides easy access to information via open interfaces. Typically, these interfaces are used by end-user applications for road maintenance professionals, traffic control systems, road weather modelling, analysis and forecasting applications, value-added solution providers and public services such as TV and radio
- Interfaces for importing data from other systems, e.g. forecast data, radar and satellite pictures, as well as observations from other systems
- The RWIS software management and monitoring is based on centralized management server, which stores all operational parameters, manages the metadata of stations and cameras, and keeps a log of system operation data
